A senior citizen with a diabolical homicide plan for her husband, ex-cons bumbling an armored truck robbery, kidnapping at an interstate rest stop, a homicide suspect who beats the cops at their own game, a fly fishing excursion turned into a nightmare of revelation and tragedy, a bus ride from hell, a pair of rogue cops who turn a street robbery from bad to worse and then to much worse, a high riding CEO living (and dying) with a secret, a mind numbing letter that sucks the life out of you-literally, and the slow motion death of a marriage. The anchor story follows a band of homeless outcasts-drunks, dopers and dealers, hookers, thieves, child molesters, schizos, and a human IED-living beneath the grid in the river bottom desperately trying to survive. These wounded and broken souls, who live each day on the edge of danger and death, are as amazing as rats and cockroaches in their adaptability and resiliency. It's hard not to take sides and hope one or the other will make it. Botting, who seems to have a penchant for losers, uncovers a world of human conflict, violence and tragedy that most of us, thankfully, will never experience. You may feel a little voyeuristic and uncomfortable but it's impossible to look away from the human train wrecks found in these stories.

Do not expect to guess the conclusion of each story as you work your way through the fascination and complexity of humanity. After concluding each read, I marveled at the conclusion, not expecting the one that was reached. Jim did a fantastic job of generating interest for the story, leaving one to wonder how each one would end. He brings out true realism and his experience as an FBI Agent is evident by the realities of life with unexpected conclusions.I highly recommend this book for entertainment of a different kind. It is a great read and I look forward to Jim writing another one.

Great group of short stories. He needs to be writing for TV or movies.
What great characters! James Botting has developed a plethora of fascinating characters, each with unique personality traits and dialogue. I can't wait for him to expand one or some of these stories to a novel. This is a great read. Don't miss it.
I really enjoyed this book. I like the writer's style. Each story has a twist to it. I thought I could see where the author was going. Without fail, there was always a "surprise".

James Botting does a great job of answering the questions that come to mind when you read through a newspaper What really happened? With lyrical descriptions, Botting paints pictures of the characters so well that you know that you have seen these people, in the market, on the street corner, or in the car next to you at the stoplight.
As he takes us on journeys inside the minds and stories of the deviants, lawmen and victims, you are sure that Botting has met and dealt with people just like them. Each story is unique and compelling with twists that are undeniably real.
A great set of short stories.
Read this practically overnight, was a great read. May be prejudiced as I spent almost 30 years as a street agent and another 12 working criminal cases. True to life, plenty of humor, mixed also with the ever present sadness in some of the stories, therefore, really true to life. Thanks Jim for a great read, and look forward to your next. River Bottom Rum is a great book that kept my attention from start to finish.The author having spent his entire career in Federal and County level law enforcement certainly has the experience and qualifications to write these stories.
Some of these stories have surprising endings,you will certainly be entertained.You will enjoy this book from start to finish.
The author has the ability to put the reader in the middle of the action,you find yourself thinking what the ending will be and it is usually not what you expected.
You will find yourself wondering about the psychology and intellectual capabilities of some of these criminals. You will read about the human side of these characters and wonder how and why they put themselves in the situation.
I recommend this book to all interested in police work and crime stories.
Having read Jim Botting's first book, Bombs, Bullets, and Fast Talk, reflecting his career in the FBI, I was delighted to find River Bottom Rum, a collection of short pieces, perhaps exercises in preparation for another full novel. The collection draws from Botting's experiences in law enforcement and service in our military and evidences an ability to apply introspection from those experiences and express them in entertaining and highly believable episodes capturing his flexibility in a full range of presentation styles.
